Charades Generator
A charades generator deals actable words or phrases for one player to mime without speaking while teammates try to guess before the turn ends. Use one-tap Quick mode or run a complete Arena with 2-4 teams, equal turns, a pausable timer, custom decks, local recovery, sharing, and printable cards. The built-in deck contains 480 independently authored, family-safe prompts.

Three-step game flow
How to play charades online
To play a charades game online, start by deciding whether you need one immediate clue or a scored group match. The Quick charades generator deals a card from your selected categories, difficulty, and audience; Arena adds teams, equal turns, and an optional pausable timer. In either mode, keep the screen turned away while the actor selects Reveal, then let that player mime the displayed word or phrase without speaking, spelling, or pointing at nearby objects. Teammates call out guesses until the actor taps Correct or Pass. The charades generator retires either card so it cannot return during the same session, deals the next unseen prompt, and shows how many matches remain. Arena awards one point for Correct, zero for Pass, rotates to the next team after the turn, and waits until every team has received the same number of turns before showing a winner or tie. Use the timer-off option whenever players need unlimited time.
Step 1
Choose the charades generator mode
Pick Quick for one clue or Arena for teams, then narrow the deck by audience, difficulty, category, and built-in or custom source.
Step 2
Reveal privately and mime
Pass the device to the actor, reveal only when ready, and act out the clue without speaking while teammates call guesses.
Step 3
Score, rotate, and finish fairly
Tap Correct or Pass. The charades generator retires the card, Arena rotates teams after each turn, and the final screen reports the winner or an honest tie.
Methodology
How the Charades Generator Works
1. Filter a reviewed corpus
The charades generator's built-in v1 corpus contains 480 original prompts: 60 in each of eight categories. Audience, difficulty, category, and source filters create one eligible view shared by Quick mode, Arena, and print.
2. Shuffle without modulo bias
Kalcify applies a Fisher-Yates shuffle and chooses each swap index with rejection-sampled crypto.getRandomValues(). For IDs A, B, C and swap indices 0, 0, the draw order is B, C, A: each card appears exactly once.
3. Keep one used-card history
Correct and Pass consume a card. The used-ID set survives filter changes, and exhaustion stops play rather than silently reshuffling. Only the explicit Reshuffle action returns matching used cards to the deck.
Arena uses a finite sequence of private reveal, play, pause or time-up, turn summary, next team, and game summary. The clock derives remaining time from performance.now() and a deadline instead of trusting interval ticks, so background-tab throttling cannot lengthen a round. The timer is optional and pausable, satisfying the practical goal of WCAG's timing-adjustable guidance. Every action also has a native button, so keyboard users can activate it with Enter or Space without device-motion permission.
Sample outputs
Five ways to use Charades Arena
Mixed-age game night
Setup: Family audience, Actions + Animals + Food, Easy + Medium, 60-second turns, Comets versus Rockets.
Output: Six alternating turns can begin with Brushing your teeth, Penguin, and Kneading bread dough. One device replaces a paper bowl, stopwatch, and handwritten score sheet.
Classroom vocabulary review
Setup: Paste 24 unit terms, choose Custom only, two teams, 90-second turns, and two turns each.
Output: The charades generator reports valid unique prompts before play. Four equal turns draw without repeats, and the turn summary separates correct and passed terms for discussion.
One fast party idea
Setup: Quick Generator, Situations & Emotions, Medium, no team setup.
Output: The charades generator deals a private card such as Trying not to laugh; Correct or Pass retires it, and the remaining count makes the no-repeat rule visible.
Remote host handoff
Setup: Add 30 short inside-joke prompts, two team names, a 45-second timer, and four turns.
Output: Share setup creates a bounded fragment link when it fits. A clean browser restores the configuration and exact Unicode prompt text but waits for an explicit start.
Phone-free classroom
Setup: Kids audience, Animals + Jobs & People, Easy, and 48 print cards.
Output: The print view produces a labeled cut-card grid plus the gesture legend. The browser can print paper cards or save its own PDF without claiming a proprietary download format.
Fair play
Common mistakes and edge cases
A dependable charades generator must protect the private clue, preserve fair turns, and explain exactly when a card can return. These are the failures that most often disrupt a real group game.
- Silently recycling cards. A hidden reshuffle makes some players repeat prompts. Kalcify stops at exhaustion and asks before restoring used cards.
- Leaking the private clue. Arena's handoff screen contains instructions, not the prompt. Reveal is explicit, and the prompt receives focus only after the actor asks for it.
- Timing by interval ticks. Browsers slow background tabs. A monotonic deadline gives the true remaining time, while Pause stores the exact remainder.
- Unequal team turns. Ending on the highest score before every team acts favors the starting team. Arena completes the configured turn count for every team before naming a winner.
- Treating a tie as a random win. The summary reports all leaders and offers an explicit tiebreaker. It never invents a winner.
- Trusting a shared link. Fragment payloads are decoded into allowlisted fields, re-run through custom-deck validation, and rejected as a whole when malformed, oversized, or version-unknown.
- Assuming sensor controls. Correct, Pass, Pause, and End turn stay as native buttons. No tilt gesture, motion permission, sound, or color cue is required to finish a game.

Balanced teams
Roughly equal groups help the equal-turn system feel fair. Use the random team generator to split a name list before opening Arena.
Random category choice
When the group cannot agree on a theme, place the category names on the random spinner wheel and let one fair spin choose the round.
Common hand signals
Show word count with fingers, tap the forearm for syllables, cup an ear for “sounds like,” and hold fingers close or wide for a short or long word. Agree before the first turn.
Classroom retrieval
The charades generator can turn a custom vocabulary deck into a movement-and-recall activity. Keep the learning goal modest: the game creates practice and discussion, not a measured educational outcome.

Charades generator FAQ
How do you play charades with this generator?
The charades generator supports two play styles: choose Quick Generator for a single private card or open Arena for teams, equal turns, a timer, and scoring. Show the card only to the actor. The actor mimes the prompt without speaking while teammates guess; tap Correct for one point or Pass for no point. Both actions retire that card from the current session.
What makes a good charades prompt?
A good prompt is recognizable and physically actable without props. Easy prompts are concrete objects, animals, jobs, or single actions. Medium prompts combine actions into a short sequence. Hard prompts demand interpretation, but they should never depend on obscure trivia or an abstract idea that cannot be shown through movement.
How long should a charades round last?
Sixty seconds is a practical starting point for family play. Thirty seconds creates a faster challenge, while ninety seconds or more helps younger players and classroom groups. Arena lets you disable the timer, choose a preset from 30 to 600 seconds, and pause at any time, so the group controls the time limit.
Does this charades word generator repeat prompts?
This charades generator does not repeat a prompt during a session. Correct, Pass, and New prompt all mark the visible card as used. Filters are applied over the same used-card history, so changing a category does not secretly restore old cards. A repeat is possible only after you explicitly choose Reshuffle used cards.
Can I add my own charades words?
Yes. Paste one prompt per line and select Custom only or Built-in plus custom. The importer normalizes spacing, removes case-insensitive duplicates, and reports unsafe markup, URLs, long lines, and size limits. Custom text stays on the device unless you deliberately create a bounded fragment link or copy the deck.
How do teams and scoring work in Arena?
Arena accepts two to four named teams and one to ten turns per team. Teams rotate in setup order and always receive equal turns. Correct answers score one point; passes score zero. The final screen reports the actual winner or every tied team, then offers a one-turn tiebreaker instead of choosing a winner at random.
How do I set up charades for kids?
For charades for kids, choose the Kids audience and Easy difficulty, then start with Animals, Actions, Everyday Objects, or Food & Cooking. These cards use familiar nouns and visible single actions. The complete built-in corpus is family-safe, while the Kids filter narrows it further to prompts that require less context.
How do I make printable charades cards?
Select the deck filters and choose 24, 48, or all matching cards. The charades generator opens a card-only browser print layout with cut lines, category and difficulty labels, plus a compact gesture legend. Most desktop browsers can save the same print layout as a PDF.
Can I share a custom charades game?
The Share setup action encodes a versioned setup in the URL fragment. Fragments are not part of the ordinary HTTP request, and the decoder rechecks every option and custom prompt before applying it. Links are capped at 8 KiB; larger decks can be copied or downloaded as a text file instead.
Will the game work if the internet drops?
After the charades generator page has loaded, prompts, random draws, scores, sharing, and the timer run entirely in the browser with no API calls. An open tab can therefore keep playing during a connection loss. A fresh offline reload is not promised because this site does not install an origin-wide service worker.
