In the United States, one standard drink contains approximately 14 grams (0.6 ounces) of pure alcohol. This equals about 12 ounces of regular beer (5% ABV), 5 ounces of wine (12% ABV), or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits (40% ABV). Other countries define standard drinks differently - for example, the UK uses 8 grams (one unit), Australia uses 10 grams, and Japan uses approximately 19.75 grams.

Counting standard drinks helps you understand your actual alcohol intake regardless of what you are drinking. A large craft beer can contain 2+ standard drinks, while a glass of wine might be 1.0 to 1.5 depending on the pour size. Health guidelines from the CDC and NIAAA use standard drinks as the unit of measure: up to 1 per day for women, up to 2 per day for men is considered moderate drinking.

A standard 750 ml (25.4 oz) bottle of wine at 12% ABV contains about 5.1 standard drinks. Higher-ABV wines (like 14-15% Zinfandel or Shiraz) push that to around 6 standard drinks per bottle. A typical restaurant pour of 5 oz equals roughly 1.0 standard drinks for 12% wine.

A standard drink (14g of alcohol) contains roughly 98 calories from the alcohol alone, before accounting for carbohydrates, sugars, or mixers. A pint of 5% beer typically has 150-200 calories total, while a 5 oz glass of wine has 120-130 calories.
