A US standard drink is defined by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) as any beverage containing approximately 14 grams (0.6 ounces) of pure alcohol. The formula converts fluid ounces to milliliters, applies the ABV fraction, multiplies by alcohol density (0.789 g/ml), and divides by 14 grams.
Note that actual pours and serving sizes vary. A restaurant wine glass may be 6-8 oz instead of the reference 5 oz. Craft cocktails often contain 2-3 standard drinks. Always check the label for ABV and measure your pour for accurate results.

What is a standard drink?
In the United States, one standard drink contains approximately 14 grams (0.6 ounces) of pure alcohol. This equals about 12 ounces of regular beer (5% ABV), 5 ounces of wine (12% ABV), or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits (40% ABV). Other countries define standard drinks differently - for example, the UK uses 8 grams (one unit), Australia uses 10 grams, and Japan uses approximately 19.75 grams.
Why do I need to count standard drinks?
Counting standard drinks helps you understand your actual alcohol intake regardless of what you are drinking. A large craft beer can contain 2+ standard drinks, while a glass of wine might be 1.0 to 1.5 depending on the pour size.
