Current quotes + dated source comparator
Window Replacement Cost Calculator
This window replacement cost calculator normalizes two dated written quotes line by line. For a secondary check, open the separate DOE/NLR comparator; it stays on its published national 2023-dollar basis and never changes prices supplied in your local proposals.
Build your comparison
Compare current quotes or open the 2023-dollar comparator
Use the planner in three steps
- 1.Define the project. Group openings by count, measured size and scope.
- 2.Normalize written quotes. Enter each dated proposal’s units, trim, disposal and visible fees.
- 3.Review the comparison. Check totals and scope differences, or switch to the dated comparator.

- $9,600
- Fixed permits, testing, tax or fees
- $500
- Subtotal
- $10,100
- Contingency (0%)

Current/local only because the amounts came from the user-entered written quote. Planning range, not a contractor quote.
Quote B
- Main-house wood windows8 × ($950 installed + $175 trim + $75 disposal)
- $9,600
- Fixed permits, testing, tax or fees
- $650

A lower total is not automatically better. Normalize product line, glass, flashing, trim, disposal, permit, tax, warranty, lead-safe work and repair exclusions first.
Estimate boundary
What this planning result can—and cannot—tell you
Kalcify totals the current prices supplied in dated written local quotes and keeps the DOE/NLR REMDB comparator unchanged at its source basis: national 2023 dollars per square foot multiplied by the published retrofit installation multiplier. A trustworthy online window replacement estimate is a broad planning band, not a bid. Product, installation method, opening condition, access, local labor, permits and hazardous-material work can move the final price. This planner therefore refuses to guess material, style, ZIP, state, wage or insert/full-frame factors. Current and local describe only values entered from a written proposal; the official reference remains separate, national and dated. Unsupported materials, specialty assemblies and scope-specific installation choices return a quote-required state instead of an invented multiplier. The result is for normalizing bids, documenting assumptions and spotting scope differences—not judging contractor fairness or predicting a project-specific market price. No data leaves your browser.
Transparent method
How the Window Replacement Cost Calculator Works
1. Current quote arithmetic
For each window group, the planner multiplies count by the user-entered installed unit quote, trim allowance and disposal allowance. It adds fixed permits, testing, tax or other visible fees, then applies the editable contingency to that subtotal:subtotal = Σ count × (installed + trim + disposal) + fixed feestotal = subtotal × (1 + contingency ÷ 100)Material, style, installation method, quote date and contractor remain report labels. They never trigger hidden adjustments.
2. Exact dated comparator
The generated snapshot selects the three REMDB rows named Vinyl, Metal and Storm from the Machine Read sheet. For each low, mid or high band, A is total area, C is the published retail intercept and R is the published retrofit installation multiplier:official installed 2023 = A × C × RREMDB’s “New Construction” multiplier is not used and is never reinterpreted as a full-frame factor.
A 36 × 60 inch opening has 15 ft² of area. The vinyl midpoint is 15 × 54.113275397063234 × 1.6725950404784211 = $1,357.64before presentation rounding. The exact low and high values are $626.09 and $2,843.71. Kalcify preserves the unrounded arithmetic internally, displays whole-dollar planning bands and exposes the source workbook checksum so a reviewer can reproduce every dollar.
Concrete scenarios
Window replacement estimate examples
Eight full-frame wood windows
8 × ($1,000 installed + $150 trim + $50 disposal) + $500 fees; 10% contingency
$10,100 subtotal · $1,010 contingency · $11,110 total
The result is current and local only because every price came from the dated written quote. Wood and full-frame labels document scope; they do not receive an invented benchmark multiplier.
One ordinary vinyl window
1 × 36 × 60 in = 15 ft² · REMDB 2024.12.23
$626–$2,844 · midpoint $1,358 · 2023 dollars
A separate current quote of $1,850 is $492 above the dated midpoint but still inside the broad band. That comparison describes position, not fairness or like-for-like scope.
A 1940 home with painted openings
8 wood units · full-frame · same $11,110 quote-plan
EPA RRP scope review required
The arithmetic still totals known bid items, but testing, containment, cleanup and hidden rot must appear in a qualified contractor’s written scope. No lead-safe surcharge is guessed.
Ten storm windows
10 × 36 × 60 in = 150 ft² · REMDB Storm row
$1,645–$4,868 · midpoint $3,860 · 2023 dollars
Storm windows are a secondary attachment measure, not complete primary-window replacement. Confirm performance, operability and scope before comparing the lower band with a full replacement.
United States context
Local scope, climate performance and lead-safe work
Geography belongs in written local quotes, not in a national coefficient. REMDB says actual prices can vary with climate, existing construction, moisture, hazardous materials, access, preparation, local wages and contractors. It also states that its ranges are not estimates for a specific project and exclude rebates or tax incentives. That is why the page does not ask for a ZIP code or apply state, travel, wage, permit, tax or regional multipliers. Those amounts remain visible only when a user enters them.
DOE’s Window Replacement checklist distinguishes installation in an existing frame from full-frame replacement. Full-frame work exposes the rough opening and addresses flashing, air sealing, insulation and trim; insert work retains more of the existing assembly. The checklist provides quality requirements, not a universal cost ratio. Selecting a specific scope therefore makes the source comparator unavailable while quote mode remains fully functional.
ENERGY STAR Version 7.0 became effective on October 23, 2023. Qualification depends on NFRC-certified U-factor and, where applicable, solar heat gain coefficient by climate zone—not frame material alone. This cost planner does not convert a material label into an efficiency or payback promise because the old-window baseline, HVAC, climate, utility price and installation quality are not present in the inputs.
EPA generally includes paid window replacement that disturbs painted surfaces in pre-1978 housing under the Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule unless a recognized exemption or lead-free determination applies. The warning is intentionally procedural: only a qualified local professional can confirm and price testing, containment, cleanup, certification and state-program requirements.
Avoidable errors
Common window estimate mistakes and edge cases
- Treating specialty assemblies as area-equivalent. Bay, bow, garden and custom units add structure, mullions, support, delivery and finishing. Keep them quote-required.
- Inventing an insert/full-frame percentage. DOE describes different work scopes but no universal price factor. Compare opening-specific written details instead.
- Auto-pricing lead-safe work. Pre-1978 paint needs a compliance review, not a generic surcharge. Testing and containment vary by actual condition and jurisdiction.
- Ignoring hidden water damage. Sill, framing, sheathing, siding and structural repair stay excluded unless the proposal carries a visible allowance.
- Calling a national range local. REMDB identifies geographic variation but supplies no project-level ZIP or state adjustment for these window rows.
- Collapsing mixed sizes into one average. Separate picture, awning, bathroom and standard groups so dimensions and proposal lines remain auditable.
- Expanding the source material labels. Vinyl, Metal and Storm are the only comparator rows. Wood, fiberglass, composites and proprietary lines need current quotes.
- Equating storm windows with replacement units. A storm window is a secondary measure, not a primary-frame replacement; compare the problem each option solves.
- Hiding fees inside a unit average. Permit, tax, disposal, trim, travel and testing should be explicit so two contractor scopes can be normalized.
- Assuming an energy credit or payback. Eligibility and savings require current product, climate and tax facts. A dated cost band cannot establish either one.
Decision vocabulary
Related concepts before accepting a quote
Insert versus full-frame replacement
Insert work retains the existing frame; full-frame work exposes the rough opening and ordinarily adds water-management and finish work. Frame condition and written scope matter more than a generic surcharge.
U-factor, SHGC and climate zones
U-factor measures heat transfer and SHGC measures admitted solar heat. ENERGY STAR thresholds vary by climate zone, so pane count or frame label alone cannot establish performance.
Contractor quote normalization
Align product line, dimensions, glass, install method, flashing, trim, disposal, permit, tax, warranty and hazardous-material work. Use the two quote columns to expose—not average away—differences.
Repair, storm window or replacement
Sash repair, air sealing, storm windows, inserts and full-frame work solve different problems. Confirm whether the issue is leakage, failed glass, rot, water, operability or appearance before comparing totals.
Project cash and adjacent quantities
If the project affects financing, the home equity calculator can show a disclosed borrowing ceiling. For new openings or exterior work, the concrete calculator handles separately measured slabs and footings; neither tool changes this window estimate.

Questions homeowners ask
Window replacement cost FAQ
How much does it cost to replace one window?
One national average hides more than it explains. As a dated reference, the DOE/NLR REMDB values produce a $626–$2,844 installed band for one ordinary 36 × 60 inch vinyl window, with a $1,358 midpoint, in 2023 dollars. That is a broad source comparator—not a current bid—and excludes project-specific product, opening condition, access, permit, tax, trim, disposal, warranty and lead-safe details. Enter a measured, dated written local quote for a current project total.
What is the difference between insert and full-frame window replacement?
Insert work keeps the existing frame and fits a replacement unit within it. Full-frame work exposes the rough opening and normally adds flashing, air sealing, insulation, water-management checks and new trim. DOE documents both scopes but does not publish one universal price multiplier between them. This calculator therefore records the selected method in the quote summary but never changes a price automatically because of that label.
Does window style change replacement cost?
Style can change hardware, glass area, structure, delivery and labor, but no open authoritative national style-factor dataset supports a trustworthy multiplier here. Record double-hung, casement or another ordinary style in quote mode so competing bids describe the same unit. Bay, bow, garden, custom-shape, impact-rated and historic-replication assemblies are explicitly quote-required rather than forced through an ordinary square-foot row.
Are wood, fiberglass, composite and aluminum windows included?
The official comparator contains only REMDB rows named Vinyl, Metal and Storm. “Metal” is a broad source class, not a promise about a particular aluminum line or thermal-break specification. Wood, fiberglass, composite, clad and proprietary materials remain fully usable in the current quote planner because user-entered prices require no invented factor, but they do not receive a DOE/NLR comparator result.
Why does location change a window estimate?
Permits, sales tax, travel, access, code, climate, labor markets and contractor availability vary by location. REMDB acknowledges those factors but does not provide a project-level state or ZIP adjustment for these rows. Geographic information enters this calculator only through prices supplied in current written local quotes. The official 2023-dollar comparator stays national and unchanged.
Do I need lead-safe work for windows in a pre-1978 home?
EPA generally covers paid window replacement that disturbs painted surfaces in pre-1978 housing under the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule unless a recognized exemption or lead-free determination applies. Window replacement is not treated as minor repair simply because the disturbed area is small. Ask an EPA- or state-certified firm to confirm and price the applicable testing, containment, cleanup and documentation; this calculator never invents a surcharge.
Should I compare quotes per window or per square foot?
Square feet are necessary for the official comparator because REMDB publishes 2023 dollars per square foot. Contractor proposals should be normalized opening by opening: count, measured size, product line, glass package, installation method, flashing, trim, disposal, permit, tax, warranty and hazardous-material scope. A per-window average can hide the effect of oversized, specialty or structurally different units.
Are permits, disposal, trim, tax and repairs included?
Only values entered in quote mode are guaranteed to be included in that quote total. Installed unit, trim and disposal are visible per-window fields; permit, testing, tax or other fixed charges have their own field; contingency is editable and defaults from the example rather than being silently imposed. Hidden rot, sill or framing repairs, siding work, incentives and lead-safe practices are excluded unless the written quote or entered allowance expressly includes them.
Will ENERGY STAR windows pay for themselves?
No universal payback follows from a replacement price. Savings depend on climate, the old assembly, certified U-factor and SHGC, air leakage, HVAC efficiency, fuel prices and installation quality. ENERGY STAR Version 7.0 uses different performance thresholds by climate zone. Evaluate comfort, condensation resistance, durability and water management with energy use rather than turning a cost input into an unsupported savings promise.
How often is the comparator data refreshed?
The deployed snapshot is generated from REMDB_2024.12.23.xlsx and carries its source URL, workbook date, CC BY 4.0 licence and SHA-256 checksum. The refresh validator re-downloads the workbook, rejects schema or fixture changes and fails loudly instead of substituting literals. The official comparator remains denominated in 2023 dollars after refresh unless the authority itself publishes a reviewed replacement dataset.
